How did School and College work out for you?
Were you able to just jot down your qualifications, anticipated salary/benefits, preferred work hours and what you would like to have for lunch etc. in a Resume and just reel in the career of your dreams?
Interestingly enough very few College graduates ever land a job related to their field. And a majority of them end up working for people who don’t even have any kind of formal education or know how to tie a shoelace. In fact, the Atlantic reported that more than 50% of College Graduates are either unemployed or underemployed.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I have enormous respect for School and College Teachers, just for putting up with us and for not keeping any concealed weapons on standby during class.
But I don’t particularly like the “School system” as it has more to do with “real confusion” than “real life”.
Real-life education actually begins AFTER you get done with College. But that’s also when people stop reading because they have either run out of words or are suffering from a rare condition called “Educational Trauma”.
Real-life education is all about learning the stuff that matters from people who have a clue about what they’re talking about.
It’s about learning the right skills to be able to walk into a Romantic relationship and being able to truly appreciate the liveliness of the companionship without getting slapped around, coma induced and mummified in the process. It’s about “knowing” how to live with total vibrancy, health, vitality, youthfulness, and passion without having an Ambulance and a couple of people in Air Fed Chemical Suits following you around. It’s about being able to walk into a job Interview with enough confidence to whip through their questions like a big scoop of ice cream and have people chasing you for your autograph afterward.
It’s about being able to have a great time at the Beach whilst being able to resituate any beautiful stranger that washes up on the shore. It’s about having strong enough communication and reasoning skills to convince an Alligator into giving up Meat and about being knowledgeable enough make a squeamish getaway should the meeting not go as planned.
It’s about being able to defend yourself against an army of very small people, who are equipped with pogo sticks and toy lightsabers. It’s about being a great philanthropist, a humanitarian and a voice of inspiration that echoes on for generations to come (without causing any avalanches in the process). And more importantly, it’s about knowing how not to totally screw up as a Spouse or Parent (which is usually a two for one deal anyway).
Sadly, all of that good stuff is what they somehow “forget” to teach at School or College. And that’s why “someone” took the time to store them away for you in that shimmering corner of the bookstore or library called the Self-Help/Self-Improvement section.
By the way, the reading only gives you the “know-how”. If you want to convert that knowledge into power and tangible results, you’ll need to grab at least one or two ideas from each book you read and make them part of your daily routine. At the same time, limit your “habit adoption capacity” to just two per week/month. The minute you take on more is when it all becomes a very blurry and hazardous juggling act.
So, if you think schooling is over, think again. The lessons in “Real life education” only just started. In fact, shouldn’t you be in class right now?
